History of the tennis courts in Livington
As the residents of the City of Livingston and Park County know, we are very fortunate to have 6 outstanding tennis courts in Sacajawea Park. These courts are the product of hard work by the non-profit and the City of Livingston over the last several decades. The non-profit is continuing to work hard to maintain the courts, the nets, the fencing, the shed, weeds, standing water, cracks, and all the associated work that comes with it. This work includes tree trimming, debris removal, snow shoveling, patch work, and numerous other maintenance activities.
Here is a brief history of the courts:
The six courts in Sacajawea Park were built in 1980 at an approximate cost of $70,000, with half paid by the city and half from a Bureau of Outdoor Recreation grant. The two middle-school courts were built in the early 1990's. The courts were no longer functional by the year 2010. Park High was set to host the divisonal tournament, but because the courts had decayed so badly, the games were held in Bozeman.
The non-profit was formed in 2011 to remedy that situation. Numerous donors who love tennis gave substantial sums of money to the non-profit in our fundraising efforts. We were able to completely rebuilt the six courts in the part, at a cost of over $300,000. Specifically, to meet current tennis court reconstruction standards, the surface was ground up, resulting in an eight-inch base at ground level. This was topped by an additional six inches of rock and a four-inch layer of asphalt. Because of this method, ten inches of the new courts are now above ground level, mitigating the effects of ground moisture and the freeze-thaw cycles of our climate.
More recently, in a joint effort between the non-profit and the City of Livingston, the courts were completely resurfaced in the summer of 2022, at a cost of over $30,000. This resurfacing was conducted by Koch's tennis court service. The work included, among other things, patching all cracks and low lying areas and applying a coat of Laykold acrylic resurfacer to the entire surface. Then, two coats of acrylic tennis court color were applied to the entire surface (Dark Blue interior and Medium Green exterior). Lastly, the contractor applied primed, textured, white tennis lines per USTA specs.
